Days We Spend
США
Добавлен 9 сен 2019
If you’re looking for tips and advice on how you travel the world longer, relocate to Europe, embrace van life without spending tens of thousands of dollars, or plan for your first (or 50th!) Camino de Santiago - you’ve come to the right place.
We started Days We Spend with a simple goal - to share how we spend our time while traveling the world. Then a funny thing happened.
You guys started following along. And you had some questions.
In 2021, we turned our Honda Element into a micro RV. We've walked across Spain multiple times, traveled around the world for a year, and in 2023 we made the leap to move to Spain full-time on an Non-Lucrative Visa.
Shawn Forno is a travel writer with 15+ years of experience writing for clients and publications including Lonely Planet, Tortuga Backpacks, Matt D’Avella, and HuffPo. Lainey Silver is an international Swing Dance teacher, choreographer, and performer with a client roster that includes Disney, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.

We're trying something a little different with this one. Enjoy this poem about life in Plaza Mayor here in Ourense. Hope you like it and it makes you a little more excited about your next visit to Spain. Is Galicia, amigos.
OK… Yeah… This was so entertaining and informative! It appears to be two years old… whatever you’re doing by now. I hope you are well and happy! Thank you for this wonderful little video.
You guys are great!!! Thanks alot for all your funny and informative and real videos. I love it ❤
Fun video! Hey, do you guys specifically address while you chose Ourense to live? I’ve been living in Madrid with a work visa, from the US, but eventually want to transition to a smaller town up north in Spain. Curious as to how you chose the town you did! If you’ve already covered in previous videos and I missed it, please let me know which one. Cheers - Larry
I’ve hiked three times during different seasons and my favourite time to hike is June. Sunny and warm, flowers and fresh fruit, festivals and a social environment. I also hiked late Sept to end of October and loved it. Not too busy, beautiful fall colours, warm and even hot days and we lucked out and only had rain 2 days on the entire journey. I agree with your advice-book your auberges from SJPDP to Pamplona and see how busy it is, then decide if you need to continue making reservations.
June is an awesome time. Glad you had wonderful experiences!
Laney, what shoes are you wearing?
They’re Altra Lone Peak Trail Runners - alnk.to/3TYUPfC I’ve got more details in my packing list video: ruclips.net/video/zL7vZXcuu8o/видео.htmlsi=5ThYmxMFG3Aj2mfP
Thanks, great info! I had an interesting variation. I had installed my key in the Windows system keystore not Firefox, AutoFirma didn't look so i had a failure, but then I figured out the icons on the top right of AutoFirma, opened the system store, and all worked, thanks! I also had a weird first pass where my location was in a different province and it would not let me change it. Closing the browser and doing a cleanup solved it. So if you have not scrubbed your browser in a while before starting, you should! Now just waiting for a response. Oh! And I did not have to sign and upload the EX-01 back to the site, it now signs it in place online (and you can still DL the EX-01).
Thanks for sharing your advice. This is super helpful!
@@DaysWeSpend Thanks! My wife had to redo her certificate (lost the password, she is on her way home from the appointment right now), so I get to go through the whole process again today for her submission, we'll see if everything goes the same way...
at 22:34 Snack Bag what is the brand? I found Hyperlite mountain gear is similar to it.
The one I have is a super cheap version from the store Flying Tiger. They don’t have it anymore.
Thank you I do not want to waste my money buying things I do not need
Buen Camino!
Absolutely loved it - thanks!!! I walked into SdC 3times, twice with a huge "sircus" of veterancars, touristbusses, weddings, etc... I'll try to get to some of these places next time! (The rooftop tour is great, did it last time, ans Seminario Menor is a great, cheap place to have a singleroom in town). The convento de San Francisco also have a "diploma" for walking into SdC...
Thanks for sharing your tip about the San Francisco diploma!
Love that car. Love and Respect from Noeway.
Thanks!
what about wealth tax
Incredibly helpful vid! Thank you so much for details of each item, links to these items and your personal experience for the need of proper clothing.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much.
vale vale vale
When I started the Portuguese this past April after Easter, there gad been a DELUGE just about every day the previous week. It only really rained one day I was there, and it was a rest say for me. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary.
Wow! You got lucky!
Thank you for not making B for blisters
Hahaha. You’re welcome! We didn’t want that on video.
Why not learn how to pronounce the name of the city correctly? There is no shch sound, and the emphasis is on a different syllable
Hey guys, have a question please. Off all the places in Spain, what made you choose Galicia to settle in? Work, culture, affordability? Any insight would be great. Do you have a video regarding this? Thanks.
Thanks for watching. We don’t have a video explaining our choice (yet). We’ve spent a lot of time in Galicia and our chosen city previous to moving here. Everywhere in Spain is great, depends on what you what.
N is for nada...😂🤣
Glad we made you laugh 🤣
Started the Francés today and met two wonderful ladies. We walked to Orisson where I stopped for the night while they continued on. Along the way we talked about RUclips channels we liked and yours was one on both of our lists. Thanks for sharing and encouraging us to walk on. Buen Camino
That’s amazing. Thank you so much for watching our videos. Buen Camino!
"C" is for "Car Chase Scene" which I didn't see in this video at all. Come on guys let's get our view count up. Thanks.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 next time
In 2023 there were actually around 600,000 peregrinos walked the various routes. There were just over 446,000 people who claimed their compostelas from the pilgrim office in Santiago. There are many who complete the Camino without bothering with a compostela. On August 20th I will be starting walking the Frances from SJPDP. I Have walked eleven full Caminos at different times of year. I never book ahead and I never have a problem getting a bed.
Absolutely. Thanks for the specifics.
My favorite 3minutes of the day so far 🙂❤️
Thanks so much!
Brilliant video!!!
Thank you!
The wise me n of the camino
😂 thanks!
You guys are great. I just got back from my first solo pilgrimage. SJPdP to SdC. I finished June 3. Your videos were an inspiration to me in my training. (Wish my Channel was as cool as yours, too). Buen Camino fellow Pilgrim!
Thanks so much! We hope your first solo pilgrimage was amazing.
Very clever! B is for blister.
Ha! We considered that one!
So ,I see you, on my way, camino invierno. If,you walking in Austria,I will give you, some information, and help you, to stay, and feel comfortable. You are welcome
Thanks! We hope to walk in Austria some day.
There are Alps,so that's why, are helps
You two are so cute! I could almost smell your feet on "Z". :)
Hahahaha, thanks!
Hercule Poirot of Camino. Jarra! Jarra! 🥃🥃 I wrote a murder mystery, Death on the Camino, after my first Camino. Never published. It’s collecting dust somewhere in the garage.
Can’t wait to read it…after a jarra!!
I missed this vid when it first came out, but better late… Once again, you’ve provided a beautifully done peek into one of your adventures and more ideas for my future travels. For me, the practice of traveling responsibly and respectfully is all important, and it’s one of the things I appreciate most about you folks and your approach to what you do. Not to mention the vicarious fun I have watching the fun you all have in these vids. ¡Saludos desde México!
Aw thanks so much. We’re always trying to show a different side of Spain and it usually involves going a little slow. Glad you like it!
I understand “slow”. 🤙🏽
Did you guys renew the health insurance paying upfront for the year (like first application) or on a monthly payment. Also our broker stopped doing adeslas can you provide your brokers details?
We renewed by paying upfront for the year. Send us an email and we’ll send you our Adeslas broker’s info.
Bar Ourense! I spent soo many night when I was studying in Santiago's university haha.
Haha fantastic. It still holds up.
VOCEIS São SHOW e acompanhei todo o Caminho daqui do Brasil e também são muitos divertidos !
Thanks so much!
Not anymore…. Things in Malaga have skyrocketed. One bedroom, one bath, is running 1,050 Euros. People get their leases between September and June. Between June and August…. Tourist season! They get shafted for those three months! Them locals are not happy about that! The Northern Europeans come in droves. The average Spanish laborer earns between 1,100 and 1,300 Euros a month. The same thing happened in Portugal, now that run is over and some people are leaving.
Absolutely. We haven’t made it to Malaga yet but we’ve heard and seen the price of things rising everywhere in Spain (and the rest of Europe and the US).
Best Camino tip I have ever seen - excellent!
Thanks so much!!
sir i had also my finger prints done now waiting for my trc card. your video help me out a lot in the whole process of applying and gettting trc card. thank you.
That’s so great. We love hearing that. Good luck with your application!
We spent 12 months in Spain on the NLV. Just outside of Madrid €700 month. We loved our time there. My family is Spanish and I’ll get citizenship and come back and live there again.
Amazing! It’s so nice when you can connect with a part of Spain and you can’t wait to come back. Good luck!
Question on the 790 052 fee form: the Los Angeles consulate website for NLV has a link to the electronic form but I can’t use it because I don’t have a NIE number yet. Did you both fill out a pdf version? Where did you get it???? Love your video and thanks so much for sharing 😀
Thanks so much. We filled out the linked form and printed it. We didn’t include the NIE and it was fine.
@@DaysWeSpend hmmm, webpage form now has tax id / foreigner id as a required field and it’s impossible to get past “obtain document“ button at bottom of online form. Maybe the page has been updated from when you did it. Can you share link you used?
Included is a dish of pimientos de Padrón - unos pican y otros non. For english speakers: Padrón peppers ... some will be hot, and others will not.
Hahaha you always hope for the “lucky” ones 😜
Wow, I also tracked all of my expenses and I spent 1100 Euros on water over 2 months of walking. My 3 months, which was a combo of walking 1/2 of the Frances, 1/4 of the Norte, and time hanging out in Portugal and 3 weeks staying in a friend's flat in France was $10,000 US. And I skimped! (I thought!)
Yeah everyone is different and the Caminos can change a lot. That seems like a lot of expensive water though! Did you ever fill up at the fountains?
......a butter knife.....? Did anyone else see that? I haven't cut mine to fit the floor of my Jeep cuz I can't find the right tool. Now I have to go get a butter knife and try that🤔
Hahahaha. It’s a bread knife. It worked really well since it’s serrated!
Did you guys use two cover letters, for each of you or one?
We each had our own cover letter.
You guys are insanely adorable! Love your energy so much! Also the breakdown is so clear and helpful! Can’t wait to move to Spain and maybe meet you guys 😊
Thanks so much!
Love your vids, thanks for sharing. How's the Spanish learning going? Any tips for someone on how or how not to go about learning Spanish? Thanks
Thanks so much. We are getting there - poco a poco. Honestly, taking regular classes, working with an online tutor or conversation partner, and just speaking a ton of Spanish have been the best ways for us to learn. It takes time, but it also just takes a lot of work and constant practice and exposure. No shortcuts!
I'm a BIG tortilla fan. Your version is a tad too soft for me (the one with the cebolla caramelizada in O Frade), but I share your overall direction. You go towards the "Betanzos style". Great stuff!. BTW: Since U guys are usually looking for suggestions. Whenever you are finishing the Camino Francés. Chek this tortilla out: O Ceadoiro in Santa Irene. For me, possibly the best tortilla.
Oh yeah. We’re all about that Betanzos style. Gooey and golden. We will absolutely check out that tortilla recommendation since we’re on the hunt for the perfect tortilla. Thanks so much and thanks for watching.
Hi you cool couple!! How's mid September in general on the Primitivo or Portugal?
Probably a great time for either of them. 😄
did you guys use professional help, or did you do it yourself?
We did it ourselves but after talking with Marina it would have cost about the same and been way easier to go with professional help. Either way works, but using a pro is a lot less stressful. Check out Marina with Bureaucracy.es. She’s the best.
